The Challenge
Mowi ASA, a Norwegian seafood company specializing in salmon farming, operates in various countries globally. Their operations span Norway, Scotland, Canada, the Faroe Islands, Ireland, and Chile. In one of their Chilean locations, they encountered significant difficulties with their existing High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) feeding lines.
The HDPE pipes were supposed to last an entire farming cycle, approximately 16 months. However, they would often break around the eighth month. This issue led to constant repairs and loss of food due to the ruptures, impacting efficiency and productivity in their operations. To address this, Mowi ASA decided to conduct a trial at one of their farms, replacing half of their feeding lines with Pexgol pipes and leaving the remaining half with HDPE.
The Solution
Pexgol provided a class 12, 90mm pipe for the project, amounting to a total of 1300 meters. The pipes were used in an aquaculture application specifically for feeding salmon at sea, with a daily flow of 4 tons of food pellets at a temperature of 10°C and pressure of 1 bar.
The trial results were resoundingly successful. While the HDPE pipes continued to break after the eighth month, the Pexgol pipes remained intact throughout the farming cycle. This victory attested to the long lifespan and flexibility of the Pexgol pipes, making them a more efficient and cost-effective solution.
As a result of the successful trial, Mowi ASA chose to continue the test in another cultivation center, further solidifying Pexgol’s role in transforming their operations.
